When’s the last time you checked your brakes on your electric scooter? Do you leave the battery discharged for weeks at a time? Electric scooters need maintenance, and we’ve seen our fair share of scooters in our repair centre that have been neglected, leading to expensive and avoidable repairs.
Proper maintenance of your electric scooter and its components is key to prolonging its lifespan. Simple habits like not leaving your battery fully discharged for long periods and keeping your tyres properly inflated can save you significant costs over time. In this article, we share practical tips to help keep your e‑scooter performing at its best.
Battery
Lithium‑ion (Li‑ion) batteries used in electric scooters have a high energy density, meaning they can store energy efficiently over long periods. However, incorrect charging habits can significantly reduce their lifespan.
Leaving your electric scooter fully discharged (0% battery) for extended periods can cause battery degradation. In some cases, the battery management system (BMS) may prevent the battery from charging altogether, requiring professional intervention or battery replacement.
Similarly, leaving your scooter plugged in long after it has reached full charge can also shorten battery life. Most branded chargers include overcharge protection, but good practice is to unplug the charger once the battery is fully charged.
Best practice:
If used regularly, charge to 100% and unplug once full
For long‑term storage, leave the battery at around 50%
With proper care, most scooter batteries are designed to last 500+ charging cycles, depending on usage and battery specifications.
Tyres
Tyre maintenance is a crucial part of electric scooter ownership. Incorrect tyre pressure increases the risk of punctures and can also lead to damage to other components.
Pneumatic (air‑filled) tyres provide better shock absorption and a smoother ride. Keeping tyres inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure (commonly around 50 PSI, depending on the model) improves grip, battery efficiency, and puncture resistance.
Tyre pressure naturally drops over time, especially with daily use or long periods of inactivity. We recommend checking tyre pressure weekly using a bicycle pump or a portable electric pump.
Even with proper care, punctures can still happen due to road conditions. Riders who want to minimise puncture risk may consider semi‑solid or honeycomb tyres, which are puncture‑proof but offer a firmer ride compared to air‑filled tyres.
General Cleaning
Keeping your electric scooter clean helps prevent issues with brakes, bearings, bolts, and moving parts. Dirt and debris can affect brake performance, while moisture and rust can reduce the lifespan of bearings and fixings.
Clean your scooter regularly with a dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding excessive water near electrical components. Preventing dirt build‑up makes maintenance easier and helps avoid long‑term issues.
Warranty & Final Notes
Whether you’re considering buying an electric scooter or already own one, proper maintenance plays a key role in performance and longevity.
